Success in Succession Planning?

Do you have a succession plan in place at your organization?
While there are many books and articles out there about how to create a succession plan, many corporations have yet to implement a plan for filling open positions within their offices. Why?
In a recent survey, organizations that didn't have plans in place noted time and money as key reasons why a plan had never been created. But that doesn't make a lot of sense to me--what kind of time and money will be spent finding a replacement for a key employee? I would think that the time to find and hire a new worker is going to be exponentially higher than putting a plan in place to develop employees who are already dedicated to your organization.
And think of the morale benefits it would bring if employees knew that filling positions with employees already there was a possibility. They would see your commitment to them and they would work to achieve high performance.
Start out small.
Put tiny steps in place and then work to full implementation. We are in a very precarious position in the economy and now, more than ever, human capital is a company's greatest asset. Don't lose your competitive edge by not being prepared to fill critical talent needs within your organization
