Failing High Potentials

Saturday, March 7, 2009

Nobody should be surprised that identifying and developing high potential leaders is falling by the wayside when companies are trying to cut.
Even as the economy dictates the priorities inside many organizations, the need to develop and retain the high performers remains unchanged. Organizations worry about not having capable leaders in place yet according to a recent study, they do little to change the equation.
Delta Organization & Leadership completed a survey and only 13 percent reported holding the executive team accountable for development and retention of high potential leaders. In every category organizations say they are committed to grooming the next generation of leaders, but when it comes time for an executive to meet regularly with one or a group of promising leaders, the executive hangs the out to lunch sign on his door.
The study found that only a small percentage of companies are placing the high potentials in assignments that are critical to the business. It seems that leadership consultants will have plenty of work to do in the coming decades.
